What’s New This Week – Week of September 25th- (Concert Guide)

The final week of September carries us into October with some honorable mentions, new faces, festivals and more. Anything from a good laugh, a good song, or just a good time, the remaining days this month have a lot to offer.
Friday, September 25, sees us into the weekend with a plethora of Charlotte talent at Amos’ Southend including dream rock group Cardfall, Charlotte trio Millennial and Charlotte artist Glaus; a lineup of guitar rock at The Milestone featuring Future Burnouts, Mercury Dimes and 1970s Film Stock; rock ‘n’ roll quintet Professor Louie & The Crowmatix at Double Door Inn; and an early show at Snug Harbor with Fayth Hope and Groove 8. Meanwhile, The Fillmore hosts the Journey tribute Trial By Fire Friday night. Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Dave Barnes, who’s well known for his efforts to songs like Blake Shelton’s “God Gave Me You,” partners up with singer/songwriter Matt Wertz at Neighborhood Theatre for their Two Birds, One Stone Tour. Alexander King and F Dux participate in the Jelly Roll Hangovers and Hot Chicken Tour at Tremont Music Hall. The lyrical and upbeat folk artist Sam Burchfield pairs up with old soul artist firekid at The Evening Muse, followed by a set by English and Spanish fusion UltimaNota.

Also on Friday night, Carolina Theatre treats the Durham area to some jazz by way of Bob James, Paul Brown and Marc Antoine, and The Sylvia Theatre in York hosts MLB Allstars with Ricky Vacca. Back at Carolina Theatre on Saturday, September 26, enjoy an acoustic evening with Yo La Tengo featuring Dave Schramm. Back in Charlotte Saturday night, Amos’ produces a tribute to arena rock with the nostalgic Smokin, Shadowgraphs celebrates an album release at Snug Harbor, and a set involving Teratorn, The Asound, Camori and Apollo and the Sun Gods delivers a night of classic metal and a few shades of rock at The Milestone. Elsewhere on Saturday, Stephane Wrembel, a well-executed artist with a track record including high mentions by Rolling Stone Magazine, score work for Woody Allen and an Academy Award performance, will be at The Evening Muse, followed by a set with NC crew Family Friend and Americana songwriter project The Last Tycoon. Neighborhood Theatre hosts the official Queen City Crown Rugby Tournament after party, Coronation, featuring DJ Sean Mac. Even though Moonchild‘s been postponed at Double Door Inn, there’s still a later set featuring blues trio Rick Rushing & The Blues Strangers. Our friends in Columbia, SC at The Music Farm will also be treating us to Moon Taxi and firekid, for those in the area.
Sunday, September 27, has its normalcies, including Snug Harbor’s Bone Snugs-N-Harmony, as well as J Balvin at The Fillmore along with Becky G; soul singer/songwriter Caleb Hawley at Double Door Inn; and indie rock band Lydia stopping by Visulite Theatre. Germany’s Der Weg Einer Freiheit pays a visit to Tremont along with fellow metal groups Barishi and Mysteriarch. Further north on Sunday, The Ritz Raleigh holds the “Locals Only” Industrial Drive Block Party, while the Carrboro County Music Festival takes over Cat’s Cradle featuring Sound System Seven, Fake Swedish, Doug Prescott Band, Stranger Spirits, Spiral Fire, Bellflower, Doug Largent Trio and Triplicity.
If you haven’t already, take your Monday night, September 28, to check out some of our best local fixtures: Snug Harbor‘s Knocturnal for hip hop fans, Double Door Inn’s The Monday Night Allstars for any kind of fans, or The Evening Muse’s spotlight night Find Your Muse Open Mic Night featuring folk artist Matt Frye this week. If you prefer, you can also swing by The Milestone Monday night for The Eddie Leeway Show along with Rhythm of Fear, Self Destruct and Society Sucker. Not in town? On Tuesday night, September 29, Cat’s Cradle wraps up their week with some rock ‘n’ roll with FIDLAR and Dune Rates and Ritz Raleigh gets treated to Father John Misty and Mikal Cronin. Back in Charlotte, The Evening Muse harbors old soul singer/songwriter Alex G and fraternal tag team The George Twins; The Milestone overdoses on estrogen with all-girl rock quartet Sick of Sarah and female-fronted Take the Fall; and Eagle Rock Gospel Singers is joined by Dust & Ashes at Snug Harbor. Grab another night of jazz Tuesday night at Double Door Inn with resident jazz pro Bill Hanna Jazz Jam. Also, you can check out The Hillbenders‘ presentation of The Who’s Tommy, a bluegrass Opry which re-envisions classic rock 45 years later in a full-length bluegrass tribute at Neighborhood Theatre. The live 75-minute show covers the entire original album and is sure to pull the strings of nostalgia of its original fans as well as pick up some new ones.

Check out Snug Harbor’s September residency, YARBS, before the month closes out. This week they’re joined by Banda Suki, Patois Counselors and Birthkontrolle Wednesday night, September 30. Get the epic experience of one-man entertainment center That 1 Guy at Double Door Inn, introduce yourself to the distinct craft of songwriting and delivery of Dopapod accompanied by the soul music of The Nth Power at Neighborhood Theatre, or enjoy some old time folk and alt-country at The Evening Muse with Christian Lee Hutson and Michaela Anne. You can also get some laughs in at Tremont Wednesday night with an overflow of comedy at this week’s Tremonstrous Comedy Wednesdays featuring Tom Simmons, Adam Alfred, Andy Perez, Matt Barrentine, Andy Sandford, David Perdue, Mike Buczek and Jason B. A little more South, you can check out Dawes with Josh Moreland at The Music Farm down in Columbia. Closing out this week Thursday night, October 1, and introducing a new month at the same time, are folk outfit Great Peacock at The Evening Muse, old-time style rock ‘n’ roll group with edges of authentic country, The Hackensaw Boys, at Double Door Inn, and an early set at Snug Harbor with Dune Rates, Black Market and Secret Hospital.
