As the temperatures descend and Summer makes its official seasonal exit, the concert and music scenes continue to blaze away. While some deem it pumpkin or boots season, the rest of us are content with another glass of whiskey or beer and any one of these shows going on this week.

The Carolinas’ favorite retro band, The Breakfast Club, throws it back for us Friday night, September 18, at Amos’ Southend along with ‘90s tribute band Gump Fiction. The ultimate ladies’ night Magic Men Live! gives us another night at The Fillmore; Swim In the Wild is accompanied by Heyrocco and Human Resources at Snug Harbor; and Atlanta four-piece, New Junk City, brings neighboring singer/songwriter Jeremy Ray, The Bleeps, and rock ‘n’ roll crew The Genuine OK along to The Milestone. Double Door Inn is closed for a private event Friday night, but you can make your way to Visulite Theatre for Skinny Lister or Neighborhood Theatre for dynamic pair Johnnyswim. Tremont Music Hall hosts a pretty epic blend featuring Canadian singer/songwriter SayWeCanFly, Evan Pharmakis’ solo music project Wind In Sails, NY acoustic artist Casey Bolles, Messenger Down and NC Southern rock/acoustic folk group Sounds Like Harmony.

Also on Friday evening, trail blazing singer/songwriter Tony Lucca heads a lineup including rock crew Hey Monea, alternative blues duo Castle Creek, and a post-set/late night dance party and DJ series, Dance Box Sessions, featuring the best classics and Top 40 tunes. North of Charlotte, Cat’s Cradle hosts Langhorne Slim & The Law along with Twain, while Carolina Theatre kicks off the first of three nights featuring Carolina Theatre Films – Retroepics, which will continue through Saturday and Sunday nights. Speaking of Saturday, September 19… The BIG 4 Heavy Metal Fest comes to Amos’ featuring all sorts of metal music past, including classic Metallica revisited by MockTallica, Anthrax tribute Among The Living, Slayer tribute Hell Awaits, and Megadeath tribute Tornado of Souls. One of Charlotte’s resident dance parties, Installation, returns for its night at The Milestone, while Weyes Blood and Landless team up at Snug Harbor. Tremont Music Hall hosts Charlotte Battle of the Bands, and Double Door Inn houses a mix of local talent including Toleman Randall, Dust & Ashes and Commonwealth on Broadway.
With an easy medley symptomatic of being Southern-born and Brooklyn-based, The Lone Bellow is an indie folk act worth discovering, and you can do that in person at Neighborhood Theatre Saturday night, that is if you aren’t at The Evening Muse checking out former ‘90s alt-rock band frontman Chris Trapper followed up by Nathan Angelo and indie blues duo Dwayne Shivers. Not in Charlotte? Check out York with Double Trouble at The Sylvia Theatre, or up in Raleigh experience Here Come the Mummies at The Ritz Raleigh. Also, at Carrboro’s own Cat’s Cradle, Carrboro Elementary’s Third Annual Back-to-School Rock Bash will commence featuring Southern Culture on the Skids, Shark Quest, The Swang Brothers, Michael Rank, Dave Hedeman of The Vagabond Union, and The World Famous MC Insecto. Ending the night at Cat’s Cradle, multi-instrumental singer/songwriter Good Old War joins Dublin quartet Kodaline.

Sunday, September 20, boasts some rough-around-the-edges rock ‘n’ roll at Tremont Music Hall with post hardcore band made Johnny Craig, Travis Garland with a genre bending the edges of R&B, Kyle Lucas and alternative rock pairing Falling Through April. Bid farewell to the heat of summer with Farewell Summer Fest at Amos’, and your typical night of karaoke at Snug Harbor’s Bone Snugs-N-Harmony, neither of which you’ll know what to expect. Hip hop master Knocturnal holds down yet another Monday night on September 21 at Snug Harbor, while Double Door Inn’s Monday Night Allstars mix up another melting pot, and The Evening Muse’s Find Your Muse Open Mic Night features this week the up-and-coming Whitney Rose, who possesses a craveable vintage pop sound delivered eloquently on her new album.
You can’t find another set more American, or more North Carolinian for that matter, than Cat’s Cradle’s Tuesday night lineup on September 22 with Appalachian styled Ellis Dyson & the Shambles, alt-country blend Escondido, and singer/songwriter Pokey Lafarge, an artist constantly aiming to stay true to American musical traditions. Also on Tuesday, Bill Hanna Jazz Jam will be at Double Door Inn as usual, and David Liebe Hart can be found at Snug Harbor along with Your Fuzzy Friends and Saturos. Check out Motorhead at The Fillmore Wednesday night, September 23, two sets by Celtic band Gaelic Storm at Neighborhood Theatre, or Snug Harbor’s September residency, YARBS, joined this week by Cabron and Mr. Gold.
Alternatively Wednesday night, you can check out Tremont’s Tremontstrous Comedy Wednesdays featuring Allen Strickland Williams, Mikee Steinberg, Chris Roberts and Jason King this week. Megan Jean & The Klay Family Band’s blend of Americana punk and dance will be at Double Door Inn, accompanied by country artist Savannah Valentino and Pirates Canoe. On Thursday evening, September 24, you can find Jamey Johnson at The Fillmore and Austin-based producer and composer Govinda at Neighborhood Theatre in Charlotte or Joyce Manor with Cheap Girls and Tracks at Cat’s Cradle or Lee Ann Womack at Carolina Theatre. Punk rock meets country with Stephen Lee, Smelly Felly and The Kyle Perkins Band at The Milestone Thursday night, while rock ‘n’ roll takes center stage at Tremont with Sham 69 and Dirty South Revolutionaries. Alt-country singer/songwriter Tim Easton takes on The Evening Muse with Charleston native and guitarist Steven Fiore who’s donned comparisons to a blend of Peter Gabriel nostalgia and Thom Yorke modernization.
