What’s New This Week For the week of May 20, 2016

The last full week of May is promising a variety of entertainment, live music, comedy and fun. Summer officially kicks off after this week, and so does most everyone’s favorite live music season.. A blessing of outdoor festivals, concerts and more is on its way to the QC, with plenty starting off this week.

The MelvinsPhoto by Vikas Nambiar The Sumerian 10 Year Tour makes a Charlotte stop Friday night, May 20, at Amos’ Southend featuring Born of Osiris, After the Burial, Upon A Burning Body, Erra, Bad Omens and Exiles, while Marlon Wayans brings his Scandal-less tour to The Fillmore. Snug Harbor hosts another rendition of Player Made, and The Milestone features a post-punk lineup including Junior Astronomers, Patois Counselors, The Mineral Girls, Shell and Cabron. Double Door Inn will be closed for a private event Friday evening, but you’ll be able to check out Hippo Campus along with Riothorse Royale at Visulite Theatre, or Canadian bluegrass band The Slocan Ramblers at The Evening Muse. On Saturday, May 21, swing back by Amos’ for the Live and Local Metal Showcase; local favorites The Loudermilks, The Menders and The Fat Face Band at Snug Harbor; and hip hop and R&B group Lil Skritt with Aloha Broha, Dollar Signs, Kilberth, Family Friend and Beach Bath at The Milestone. Charlotte power pop band The Spongetones will be at Double Door Inn Saturday night, while Danny Wood of New Kids on the Block will be at Neighborhood Theatre. Folk rock crew Big Shoals and five-piece folk band The Waydown Wanderers will be at The Evening Muse, and School of Rock occupies both Saturday and Sunday evening at Visulite Theatre with their Spring Shows ensemble featuring People’s Blues of Richmond, Moose Kick and Dank.

Rounding out the weekend in Charlotte on Sunday, May 22, will be Stuck on Planet Earth along with Rothschild, Blinds and Muffled at The Milestone, Snug Harbor’s karaoke night, Bone Snugs-N-Harmony, and award-winning bluegrass band Blue Highway at Neighborhood Theatre. On Monday, May 23, you can check out alternative favorite, The Neighbourhood, at The Fillmore; Snug Harbor’s hip hop resident, Knocturnal; Double Door Inn’s house variety crew, The Monday Night Allstars; and The Evening Muse’s open mic night featuring Americana singer/songwriter Levi Parham.

Double Door Inn‘s jazz session, Bill Hanna Jazz Jam, returns for another week on Tuesday, May 24, while singer/songwriter JMSN is joined by California’s Tiffany Gouche at Neighborhood Theatre, and one-man band The Suitcase Junket teams up with singer/songwriter Connor Zwetsch Band at The Evening Muse. Also this week, in the Raleigh/Durham area, our northern pals at Durham’s Carolina Theatre will feature an edition of Carolina Theatre Films, Retro Treasures, on Friday night, and another edition, Lucia di Lammermoor, on Wednesday night.

Wrapping up the week back in Charlotte will be some electronic and synthpop Wednesday, May 25, at The Milestone with Astari Night, Astrea Corp, Tenderlash and Iioioioii; Snug Harbor’s May residency, Bubonik Funk; Bear Hands at Neighborhood Theatre; multi-instrumental singer/songwriter Good Old War with Canadian singer/songwriter Joshua Hyslop at The Evening Muse. You can check out Covers for a Cause at Double Door Inn benefiting Kindermourn and featuring music of Merle Haggard by way of Mike Strauss, Loose Lugnuts, Bill Noonan, Sam the Lion and more. On Thursday, May 26, wind down the week at Double Door with some Americana courtesy of Session Americana, at Neighborhood Theatre with some blues thanks to Tab Benoit and Dead 27s, with Snug Harbor’s week-end party, SHIPROCKED!, featuring LIPGLOSS, or at The Milestone with Butch Muffles and the Buck Nasty Bastards, Mercury Dimes, Black Fleet, EVERGONE and For the Byrds.
