What’s New This Week

For the week of March 25, 2016

“Spring at Duke Mansion” by Dianna Augustine

The official First Day of Spring just passed a couple of days ago, but typical of Carolina seasons and weather, Mother Nature went all NAHHH on us and, long story short, I had to defrost my car this morning when leaving for work. ‘Spring’ my ass. Upside: I discovered a couple of pretty cool spots in the crevices of downtown Charlotte this weekend that I’m pretty stoked about. If you ever need a little spot to dip into that’s laid back and puts out uber relaxing vibes, check out The Unknown Brewery on Mint Street (they have card and board games and also allow dogs) for a unique menu of beer, including a literal Ginger Ale, as well as Craft Tasting Room and Growler Shop on S Church Street, which is a combined brew store and parlor. I’m probably the only person on earth that actually hates beer, but after visiting Craft, I surprisingly tried about three different beers that I actually didn’t mind. (For those completely anti-beer, though, have no fear; they also sell food, ciders, and wine by the bottle). Extra upside: these bars are literally back to back of one another, with an alley’s walk between the two, so you can hit up both without relocating entirely (or even getting behind the wheel).

As for live music and shows to look forward to this week, whether it feels like March or January outside this weekend, there’s a lot worth getting out and about in the city for. Starting things off Friday evening, March 25, includes some heavy rock at The Milestone involving ROM, Suit City, Del Rio and The Paindeer; BASSH and Brave Baby at Visulite Theatre; five-piece roots rock blend Big Daddy Love with homegrown Upstate Rubdown at Double Door Inn; and the Papadosio music festival at The Fillmore.

Sister Hazel

For fans of The Avett Brothers or Mumford & Sons, check out The David Mayfield Parade at The Evening Muse Friday evening followed up by a later set with singer/songwriter Nora Jane Struthers & The Party Line. For something more roots-rock, swing by Neighborhood Theatre for Paul Thorn Band; and for those into more localized music, stop by Snug Harbor for a lineup featuring The Luciferian Agenda, Black Market, Modern Primitives and JPH. Also on Friday, an alt-rock crew most of us all know and love, Sister Hazel, will be at Amos’ Southend along with singer/songwriter JD Eicher and Brad Ray.

The weekend in the Triangle area looks energized and versatile with an edition of Carolina Theatre Films’ Retro Fantasma at Carolina Theatre in Durham Friday night featuring horror, Sci-Fi and action-adventure films from 1920-1996, and pop star Aaron Carter at Cat’s Cradle over on the Raleigh side. On Saturday, March 26, Fleetwood Mac tribute Rumours will be at The Ritz Raleigh; while Carolina Theatre have Bedroom Community and Mount Moriah is joined by Elephant Micah and Dex Romweber at Cat’s Cradle.

Wiggle Wagons

Around Charlotte Saturday evening, Red Dirt Promotions Carolina Music Showcase will be at Amos’ featuring Dirty Grass Soul, Tyler Hatley & The Little Mountain Band and Kenny George Band; while you can find Journey tribute Trial By Fire at The Fillmore, three-piece Greenville crew Glass with alt-rock group The Francis Vertigo and Charlotte native Human Pippi Armstrong at The Milestone; and Atlas Road Crew at Visulite with The Trongone Band and Late Night Special. Elsewhere on Saturday, Wiggle Wagons will be at Snug Harbor with Chamomile & Whiskey and Katya Harrell, indie-rock group Run River North are accompanied by the divinely satisfying singer/songwriter Charlie King at Neighborhood Theatre; and Double Door Inn gets a local lineup including Toleman Randall, Little District and The Damned Diamonds. Classically-trained duo Barnaby Bright also join us on Saturday at The Evening Muse with Charlotte Symphony cellist Alan Black, followed up by a later set including the indie-rock The Business People and psychedelic pop Landless.

Sunday, March 27, is laid back with Snug Harbor’s karaoke night, Bone Snugs-N-Harmony; and the blues rock of Femignome, Heavy Eyes, Mercury Dimes and Joules at The Milestone. On Monday, March 28, you’ve got your choice of Snug Harbor‘s hip hop night, Knocturnal; Double Door Inn‘s resident variety pack, The Monday Night Allstars; and The Evening Muse’s open mic night featuring this week the high-energy crew The Sweet Lillies with their wide scope of instrumentality. Continuing into the week around town will be Player Made Tuesday at Snug Harbor Tuesday night, March 29, Double Door Inn’s Bill Hanna Jazz Jam, and Autolux at Visulite Theatre.

Back in the QC mid-week, there’s additional NC stops for G Love & Special Sauce at Visulite and Chance the Rapper at The Fillmore Wednesday night; as well as Snug Harbor’s March residency, SERFS, joined this week by Cabron, Tape Daze and Pretty Baby. Also on Wednesday evening, you can check out local garage pop/rock group Hectorina at The Milestone with the Philadelphia and Maine hybrid Friendship, Naked Naps; and For the Byrds, an architecture of spirited dreamers, Blackfoot Gypsies, with The Yawpers at Double Door Inn; some old school rock ‘n’ roll at Neighborhood Theatre with Drivin’ N’ Cryin’ and Great Peacock, and childhood trio Hey Monea with soulful singer/songwriter and guitarist Paul Pfau at The Evening Muse.

This week’s closeout on Thursday, March 31, includes the transparently authentic Silversyde with Charlotte rock band Fear Until Fury at The Milestone; a night of rock ‘n’ roll at Double Door Inn featuring Luxuriant Sedans and Harvey Dalton Arnold; The Raineers with Judemoses and Solis at Visulite Theatre; and Snug Harbor‘s weekly party SHIPROCKED! featuring this week Valley of the Dolls. For fans of the likes of Thom Yorke, consider spending your Thursday night at The Evening Muse with Young Mister, who’s been described as a young or modernized Peter Gabriel, and Charleston rock band The High Divers.
