February was a longer month this year and it’s still unbelievable that it’s March already. Now that everything’s thawed out around here, we can finally start getting into the warmer weather spirit, and that includes a lot of live music and good times.

Starting the weekend off on Friday, March 11, in our nearby/surrounding areas are some classic, nostalgic rock ‘n’ roll shows including Drivin’ N’ Cryin’ down at The Music Farm in Columbia, SC and the Eagles tribute band, On the Border, up in Raleigh at The Ritz Raleigh. Around Charlotte Friday night, you can find a little bit of punk rock and metal at The Milestone with Ramming Speed, All Hell, Extermination Rite, Nemesis and Hollowborn; a bit of high energy with gypsy punk band Strung Like A Horse at Double Door Inn; and legendary long-time blues artist John Mayall at Neighborhood Theatre.

Also in town on Friday, you can check out the melting pot of rock styles with March Madness at Amos’ Southend featuring Steelfish & Incense, Key of Betrayal, This Weakness Being Mine, Bloodstream, Outlaw Crow, The Halves, Lunacy Rain, Selfless Sunday and Front Porch; WILDHONEY with Expert Alterations and Jenny Besetzt at Snug Harbor; The Slackers and The Duppies at Visulite Theatre; or enjoy A Pleasantly Sad Evening at The Evening Muse with EMMY award-winning composer and sound designer Jason Hausman and singer/songwriter Chris Smith. They’re followed up by a set with street music-inspired Moon Hooch and seven-piece groove band KOA.

On Saturday, March 12, you can check out Cee Lo Green– former half of hip hop duo Gnarls Barkley– at Amos’, alt-rock group X Ambassadors with Seinabo Sey at The Fillmore, Yonatan Gat with Andy the Doorbum and Justin Aswell at Snug Harbor, and The Body Bags with The Fill Ins and Butch Muffles and the Buck Nasty Bastards at The Milestone. Elsewhere on Saturday evening, eclectic songwriting crew Tree Tops are joined by Charlotte cover band Mojo Ruckus at Double Door Inn, while indie trio Los Lonely Boys will be at Neighborhood Theatre. Elsewhere, The Evening Muse hosts a local lineup including The Loudermilks and Doc Chad’s Contemporary Rock Band followed by The Tragic Thrills and The Wild Domestic.

The weekend continues in Raleigh/Durham featuring Pentagram with King Giant, Colossus and Demon Eye at Cat’s Cradle Saturday night while Durham’s Carolina Theatre holds another feature of Carolina Theatre Films Retro Fantasma including showings of The Classic Horror Trailer Show and Candyman. On Sunday, March 13, X Ambassadors travel north for another NC show at Cat’s Cradle along with Seinabo Sey and Powers while Carolina Theatre features Chris Mann.

In Charlotte on Sunday, metal band Saosin will be at Amos’ along with Brigades, Limbs and Young and Heartless, while Hoodie Allen makes a stop at The Fillmore on the Happy Camper Tour joined by Superduperkyle and Blackbear. Snug Harbor hosts another karaoke night of Bone Snugs-N-Harmony and The Milestone has a lineup featuring Dollar Signs, The Jukebox Romantics, Eli Whitney and The Sound Machine and Freya Wilcox and The Howl. You can also check out the music festival Merlefest On the Road at The Evening Muse featuring Tellico and High Plains Jamboree, as well as Glaus along with Millennial, Sugar & Steel and Good Bones at Visulite Theatre.

The week continues Monday, March 14, with some local favorites, both resident and visiting alike. Snug Harbor’s hip hop resident Knocturnal returns another week, as well as Double Door Inn’s variety show with The Monday Night Allstars and The Evening Muse’s open mic night, Find Your Muse, featuring this week Brooklyn-bred rock ‘n’ roll group A Deer A Horse. On Tuesday, March 15, The Milestone presents some more local favorites all night long including The Goddamn Gallows, Glitter Bomb Burlesque, The Menders, The Commonwealth and Dead Cat, while Migos Dab Tour make a stop at The Fillmore and Double Door Inn gives you something to unwind with courtesy of Bill Hanna Jazz Jam.

Swinging through mid-week is Cyclops Bar along with Modern Heritage Weekly Mix Tape at Snug Harbor Wednesday night, March 16, Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds with Holy Ghost Tent Revival at Visulite, and Charlotte Folk Society‘s CFS Folk Jubilee at The Evening Muse. Wrapping it up in the QC for us this week Thursday, March 17, will be NC three-piece Snatch the Snail with Charlotte reggae rock group Lovely Budz and Uncoil at The Milestone, Nashville harpist/songwriter Timbre with Charlotte crew Broadcast Safe at The Evening Muse, Southern solo artist Damon Fowler at Double Door Inn, and Snug Harbor’s infamous end-of-the-week party SHIPROCKED! featuring Hank & Cupcakes and Sharkmuffin this week.

Finishing out the week in Columbia Wednesday night will be the BANFF Mountain Film Festival. The Triangle Area comes to an end this week in music with Indigo Girls at Carolina Theatre Monday night, Rickie Lee James Tuesday night and The Pink Floyd Experience Wednesday night. Additionally, you can catch Fetty Wap at The Ritz Raleigh Thursday evening and Drive-By Truckers with Thayer Sarrano at Cat’s Cradle.
