What’s New This Week

for the week of January 22, 2016

Something Clever - 07

by: Kevin McGee

We may have bid farewell in 2015 to some of our favorite groups and venues (we still miss you, Tremont), however barely a month into 2016 and the Charlotte music scene has refused to slow down. Between here to Raleigh and here to Columbia, there’s anything from trap music to folk this week in live music.

Something we’re not unhappy to see again in 2016 is the infamous retro band, The Breakfast Club, returning to Amos’ Southend Friday evening, January 22, as well as some other local favorites at Snug Harbor including Dollar Signs, Corporate Fandango, D.O.G. and Normal Dennis. Over at The Milestone Friday night, punk rock groups BraceFace and Canker Blossom team up, while Double Door Inn takes a rock ‘n’ roll and jazz band approach featuring Stewart Mauldin and All Dat Jive, and The Fillmore hosts Papadosio’s Extras In A Movie Tour Act II. You can also check out Maradeen with The Vegabonds, Steppin Stones and Piano at Visulite Theatre, or the unfiltered style of Grant Lee Phillips along with Steve Poltz over at The Evening Muse. For those further south this weekend, consider swinging by The Music Farm in Columbia to check out St. Paul and The Broken Bones.

The weekend also looks good for our northern NC friends in the Raleigh/Durham area. If you’re in town, check out Night Moves Friday night at The Ritz Raleigh featuring Dada Life, Black Violin at Carolina Theatre or Aaron Carter at Cat’s Cradle. On Saturday, January 23, On the Border will be at The Ritz, while multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter Phil Cook is joined by musical project The Dead Tongues at Cat’s Cradle, and on Sunday, January 24, Carolina Theatre hosts Indigo Girls.

Saturday night in Charlotte consists of a ton of local acts and artists, including a final show by Ernie at Snug Harbor accompanied by Shell, Suit City and Fat Geoff. Also featuring local talent Saturday evening is Neighborhood Theatre showcasing Charlotte group Warsong with Ancient Cities and Nashville crew Bassh, and The Evening Muse with rock ‘n’ roll group The New Schematics and local trio Millennial. Double Door Inn is dedicating its Saturday to local music and to Charlotte musician, Jake Berger, who was recently injured in an accident before Christmas and faces a long recovery. Participating in the Jake, Rattle & Roll benefit show are Crisis, The Belmont Playboys, members of The Spongetones, Sheila Carlisle and more.

Elsewhere Saturday night around town, you can enjoy some traditional hard rock at Amos’ with Jackyl; Digital Noir featuring Michael Price and DJ Spider at The Milestone; or Indigo Girls at The Fillmore. On Sunday, January 24, stop by The Milestone for some indie pop courtesy of Brook Pridemore, The Mineral Girls, Beverly Tender and For the Byrds; Neighborhood Theatre for five-piece Americana and bluegrass group Greensky Bluegrass along with Horseshoes and Hand Grenades; or Snug Harbor for the karaoke party, Bone Snugs-N-Harmony.

Monday night, January 25, is devoted to local residencies, including The Evening Muse’s Find Your Muse Open Mic Night spotlighting country singer/songwriter Violet Delancey, Double Door Inn’s variety night The Monday Night Allstars, and Snug Harbor’s music trivia night Let’s Get Quizzical. Also on Monday evening, you can experience hard rock fixture Breaking Benjamin unplugged at The Fillmore. There’s an opportunity Tuesday, January 26, to check out one of my top artists discovered in 2015, indie singer/songwriter Greg Holden, at The Evening Muse, check out Double Door Inn’s Tuesday night jazz ritual Bill Hanna Jazz Jam, or pay a visit to Snug Harbor for Bully and Palehound.

This Wednesday, January 27, is the last chance to check out Snug Harbor’s January residency, Motel Glory, accompanied this week by Robert Childers, Francis Vertigo and Mr. Gold. Elsewhere Wednesday night, Marianas Trench makes a stop at The Fillmore on the Hey You Guys!! tour; Marrow pairs with Chicago artist Sima Cunningham at Double Door Inn; and The Evening Muse hosts Victor Krummenacher of Camper Van Beethoven. On Thursday, January 28, you can check out Naughty By Nature at The Fillmore, Neighborhood Theatre’s country, blues and rock lineup featuring Reverend Horton Heat, Unknown Hinson, Nashville Pussy and Igor & Red Elvises, or get SHIPROCKED! at Snug Harbor.
