What’s New This Week

for the week of January 8, 2016

The Not Likelys - 07

While some of Charlotte’s finest are releasing albums, celebrating new music and collectively kicking the new year off with a fantastic start, I’m still over here trying to remember to write “16″ instead of “15″ at the end of all of my dates. Regardless, 2016 is already off running with great new music, free art and good times, musically or otherwise.

Starting off the weekend this Friday evening, January 8, will be Charlotte Southern and alt-rock singer/songwriter Michael Tracy at The Evening Muse followed up by reggae crew The Big Takeover and Jahlistic; blues and soul artist John Nemeth at Double Door Inn; Home Is Where the House Is at Snug Harbor; and five-piece rock band Kelen Heller at Amos’ Southend along with NC rock band A Course of Action, 7 Stone Riot, Charlotte alt-rock group Beyond the Broken, Meliora and Exilies. The week is a tad bit quiet for our friends in the Raleigh/Durham area, but a week full of Carolina Theatre Films events at Durham’s Carolina Theatre will get revved up on Friday with Retro Epics, which will continue throughout the entire week every night through Thursday the 14th.

Moving on into Saturday, January 9, you can find The Dead Men at The Milestone with Malibu Shark Attack!, Sulfur and Red Jesse; the Winter Warm Up Music Showcase at Amos’; Cookies and Crafts at The Fillmore; and Ultima Nova with Patabamba at Snug Harbor. Elsewhere Saturday evening, Southern rock artist Rockie Lynne will be at Double Door Inn, and Woody Pines along with Fireships brings its version of new folk to The Evening Muse. Tying up the weekend on Sunday, January 10, The Milestone hosts Moss Birthday Weekender Day 3 featuring The Commonwealth and Hollowborn, while Snug Harbor hosts another karaoke night with Bone Snugs-N-Harmony. Patrons at Double Door Inn will be treated to the modern Zydeco music of Jeffrey Broussard & The Creole Cowboys, and Charlotte School of Rock pays a visit to Neighborhood Theatre. Also on Sunday, international singer/songwriter Christy Snow celebrates her album release at The Evening Muse.

On Monday, January 11, you’ve got your choice of punk and indie rock at The Milestone with Sink Tapes, Mr. Gold, Warn the Duke and Blame It On Bart, hip hop with the weekly Snug Harbor resident Knocturnal, or all around variety with Double Door Inn’s The Monday Night Allstars. You can also check out this week’s featured artist at The Evening Muse’s Find Your Muse Open Mic Night, Lauris Vidal. If you’re further north this week, Waka Flocka takes over Carrboro County’s Cat’s Cradle three nights in a row including Monday, Tuesday the 12th and Wednesday the 13th.

Tuesday looks to be a slow evening around town but, if you haven’t yet, consider swinging by Double Door Inn for Bill Hanna Jazz Jam for an enjoyable evening of great jazz music. For the mid-week, enjoy Free Wednesdays at the Mint Museum and take an opportunity to enjoy some great artwork without forking over a ton of money (save that for the live music and beer later that night). Additionally on Wednesday, the rockabilly and retro rock collaboration of Lara Hope and the Ark-Tones will be at The Milestone accompanied by the shimmer and sparkle that is Glitter Bomb Burlesque, Truckstop Preachers and Jem Crossland, and Snug Harbor’s January residency Motel Glory returns for another week.

Consumption Casualties - 01

Bringing up the rear on Thursday night, January 14, is a lineup at Amos’ including SteVen D LightSpring, Gina Taree, Dillon Reynolds, Molding Willard, Front Porch, Michael York, ForgiveMeNot, Freddie’s Show and Ethan Allen. Southern rock crew Cranford Hollow will be at The Evening Muse, and old school Liquid Stranger with Brooklyn electronic music project Space Jesus and electronic producer Au5 will be at Neighborhood Theater. The Milestone gets a heavy dose of garage pop and loud rock ‘n’ roll courtesy of Room Full of Strangers, Evergone, Consumption Casualties and For the Byrds, while Snug Harbor celebrates another week with SHIPROCKED!, and our pals in Raleigh at The Ritz Raleigh close out their week with Aaron Lewis.
