For most of us south of the stateline, this past weekend was slightly put off by the unexpected re-enactment of Noah’s Ark or, at least, that’s how it felt. (A local zoo in Columbia actually lost several of its animals during the flooding, so some residents may have looked out of their windows over the weekend and either expected to see a giant man-made ark float by, or come across someone who rolled wrong in a game of Jumanji.) Fortunately, Charlotte and the immediate surrounding weren’t effected so harshly. A lot of plans still most likely ruined but now you’ve got a great excuse to get out and stretch your (sea) legs this week after nearly floating away.

Our friends in Raleigh/Durham kick off the weekend Friday night, October 9, with Mint Condition at The Ritz Raleigh, country music native Leann Rimes at Carolina Theatre, and singer/songwriter Matt Nathanson (you may remember him best for his popular single not long ago, “Come On Get Higher”) at Cat’s Cradle. Meanwhile in Charlotte Friday night, Mike Ferrio from Good Luck Mountain does a solo set at The Evening Muse followed up by electro pop group Rose Quartz; Tremont Music Hall hosts a lineup of wicked stage energy including Insane Clown Posse, P.O.D., Stitches, Young Wicked, Dop DOD and F. Dux; NC singer/songwriter David Wilcox visits Neighborhood Theatre; and you can check the award-winning bluegrass of Town Mountain at Double Door Inn. Also, Texas quartet Nothing More will be joined by The Color Morale, Turbowolf and Separations at Amos’ Southend, The Milestone gets a blend of Southern rock and hard rock with Lee Bains III and The Glory Fires, PUJOL and Wahya’s, and Collective Soul makes another NC stop at The Fillmore.

Saturday, October 10, favors local music and singer/songwriters including the emotionally brimming Peter Mulvey with Nashville artist Alice Peacock at The Evening Muse followed up by Texas group Telegraph Canyon. NC folk rock band Time Sawyer with Mike Ramsey will be at Neighborhood Theatre, and folk lyricist with a rock edge Jessica Lea Mayfield owns the stage at Double Door Inn. In the Valley Below can be found at Visulite Theatre, singer/songwriter Mat Kearney teams up with alternative pop group Parachute with a knack for sharp songwriting at Amos’, and The Milestone has over post-hardcore metal of Cavern, Greevace and Boar.

In Columbia at The Music Farm Saturday night, you can check out Man Candy, or for those north of Charlotte this weekend, you can check out the addictively-unique Glass Animals at The Ritz Raleigh, Steven Wright at Carolina Theatre, or Noah Gundersen with the reflectively kickstarted quartet Field Report at Cat’s Cradle. Durham’s Carolina Theatre spends its Sunday evening with the Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle, while Carrboro County’s Cat’s Cradle hosts California-bred five piece The Growlers with The Babe Rainbow and DJ Johnny Basil. Sunday, October 11, is a bit more of a melting pot than the rest of the weekend featuring some garage rock at The Milestone with Koala Tea Time, Lazy Hands, Mr. Gold and Graham GG Hellderman; Snug Harbor’s resident karaoke party Bone Snugs-N-Harmony; and Appalachian roots band Cabinet at Neighborhood Theatre. The biggest local hip hop concert of the year in Charlotte, Kings of Charlotte 2, will be held at Tremont, and the 15 Short Film Festival stops by The Evening Muse.

The Evening Muse’s Find Your Muse Open Mic night this week on Monday, October 12, hosts Colin Cutler, while the genre chameleon Reptar makes a stop at Neighborhood Theatre. Double Door Inn’s variety resident The Monday Night Allstars freshens up another Monday night along with Snug Harbor’s hip hop resident Knocturnal, and KORN is accompanied by Suicide Silence and Islander at The Fillmore. Elsewhere, you can check out the indie pop of The Mineral Girls with Naked Naps, Pet Names and It Looks Sad at The Milestone, while Cat’s Cradle in the Triangle area spends its Monday night with Smallpools, Phoebe Ryan and Machineheart. Stick around Durham Tuesday night, October 13, for Waxahatchee, the solo music project of Southerner Katie Crutchfield, with Weyes Blood and Try the Pie at Cat’s Cradle, and one for the paranormal fans at Carolina Theatre with Ghost Hunters Live. Back in Charlotte Tuesday night, Bill Hanna Jazz Jam spends another mid-week night with us at Double Door Inn; the never-too-serious Cory Branan adds to a lineup at The Milestone along with NC singer/songwriter Ross Adams, Family Friend and Sinners and Saints; and Snug Harbor hosts Gringo Star and Luciferian Agenda.

Wednesday night, October 14, is home for comedy, rock ‘n’ roll, and unexpected genre blends, such as the spicy medley of New Orleans funk with hints of rock and hip hop courtesy of Flow Tribe at Double Door Inn and a mix of Bottle Rockets’ rock ‘n’ roll with Mark Olson’s reggae rock at Neighborhood Theatre. Amos’ will have a lineup of variety rock featuring Otherwise, Like A Storm, Seasons After, First Decree and Graceful Regret, while NC alt-rock band Knowne Ghost stops by The Milestone with the indie-folk of Little War Twins, electro rock of Hudson K and American rock of Dizzy Bangers. Additionally on Wednesday, Danzig joins Blackest of the Black at The Fillmore; The Evening Muse hosts Menage Tour featuring Hannah Aldridge, Levi Lowry and David Mayfield; Comedy Wednesdays at Tremont returns with Clint Nohr, Jarred Kreger, Chris James and Mimi Benfield; and Snug Harbor’s October residency Monster Crux returns for its second week.

Also on Wednesday evening, Columbia’s Music Farm has Cherub, and on Thursday night, October 15, Strictly Business. Back in Raleigh’s surrounding area Thursday night, Carolina Theatre’s Club Carolina features Marc Broussard, while The Ritz Raleigh holds Pulse FM’s Throwback Thursday Birthday Bash featuring everyone’s favorite reggae/hip hop throwback, Shaggy. Around Charlotte Thursday night, you can find Symphony X with Overkill at The Fillmore; an early show at Snug Harbor with Wahya’s, Pleather and Prude Boys; or New Orleans brass band edged with blues, Dirty Bourbon River Show, with roots rock crew Birds of Chicago at The Evening Muse. Also, you can check out Josh Garrels‘ mixture of folk and hip hop at Neighborhood Theatre along with soul and R&B artist Liz Vice; Patrick Sweany’s musical landscape reaching from blues and folk to bluegrass and rock with Durham singer/songwriter Brice Randall Bickford at Double Door Inn; or another rock-themed turnout at The Milestone featuring The Sticky Bandits, Midnight Sun, Lightning Foot Jenkins and Slow Motion Riot.
