What’s New This Week For the week of November 11, 2016

With Election Day finally over, everyone on my news feeds will finally return to their regularly scheduled spats and drama. I may be the only one, but political divides drive me nuts. By the time this goes to press, so to speak, and is available for you all to read, we will already know who has won the 2016 election. Half the people I know will be feeling victorious and particularly prideful while the other will feel defeated and particularly discouraged.
At the end of the day, no matter who wins this election, we are not only Americans, but human beings, capable of upholding the country together. It’s up to us to continue being good and decent people. It’s not all up to one individual who just happens to live in that big white house with a title in front of their name of “President”. I can’t tell anyone who to or not to vote for, but I can encourage the self-accountability that’s still necessary, no matter which side prevails.

Kicking us off this week on Friday, November 11, will be the pop erotica burlesque show, The Sweet Spot Charlotte with their Red Light Special Edition at Amos’ Southend, The Mineral Girls along with Dollhands, Zodiac Lovers, and Melt at The Milestone, Ingrid Michaelson at The Fillmore, Swim in the Wild with Freeway Revival, Lovely Budz, and Lisa de Novo at Visulite Theatre, and Astrea Corp with Shadowgraphs, Tin Foil Hat, and Favelas at Snug Harbor. You can also check out The Keller Williams Kwahtro Friday evening at Neighborhood Theatre along with Zach Deputy, as well as a benefit at Double Door Inn for The Relatives Youth Crisis Center featuring Charlotte group Underground Detour Band and British singer/songwriter Nick Howard along with Ariel Petrie, followed up by the Southern Gothic/blues of Amythyst Kiah & Her Chest of Glass along with teen trio with vintage influence, Posh Hammer.

On Saturday the 12, swing by The Fillmore and check out Drive-By Truckers, Snug Harbor for Hungry Girl with It’s Snakes, StarBenders, and The Poor Decisions, or The Milestone for the dark dance party, Digital Noir, featuring Michael Price and DJ Spider. Elsewhere on Saturday night, Sublime tribute Badfish can be found over at Amos’ along with Minnesota License Plate on the Indian Summer Tour 2016, Double Door Inn hosts the R&B style blues of Roomful of Blues, American Aquarium takes the stage over at Visulite Theatre, Neighborhood Theatre gets some bluesy folk rock courtesy of The Steeldrivers and Bonnie Bishop, and English folk group Skinny Lister is accompanied by the fiddle and banjo-ridden Lincoln Durham and lyricist and tunesmith Trapper Schoepp at The Evening Muse.
The weekend in Charlotte rounds out on Sunday the 13 with Snug Harbor‘s resident karaoke night, Bone Snugs-N-Harmony, PartyNextDoor with Jeremih on the Summer’s Over Tour at The Fillmore, some local hardcore over at The Milestone featuring Self Destruct, Reality Check, Joy, Caged In, Violent Life Violent Death, and Black Fleet, as well as Henhouse Prowlers along with Josh Daniel and Mark Schimick at Visulite Theatre. Additionally on Sunday night, you can check out author and comedian Steve Hofstetter over at The Evening Muse, or pay a visit to Double Door Inn for the Wind River Cancer Wellness Retreats Benefit and Holiday Party featuring Toleman Randall, Leadville Social Club, The Bloodworth Project, and Rick Spreitzer & The Antique Babies.
Meanwhile, in the Raleigh/Durham area this weekend, Cat’s Cradle gets a dose of digital pop with Yeasayer and Lydia Ainsworth on Friday night, while The Ritz Raleigh also gets a visit from PartyNextDoor and Jeremih on Saturday night, and Carolina Theatre hosts three nights of Comiquest all weekend long with The Adventures of TinTin on Friday night, Mean Girls on Saturday night, and Big Trouble In Little China Sunday night. You can also check out some indie rock over at Cat’s Cradle Saturday evening with Guided by Voices and Surfer Blood, and swing by again on Sunday for Benjamin Francis Leftwich with Brolly and Marlon Blackmon of Foxture. Elsewhere this weekend, for those further south in Columbia this weekend, you can check out Chris Robinson Brotherhood at The Music Farm in Cola, as well as Jam Room Music Festival Afterparty on Saturday night and Blues Traveler on Sunday.

Back in Charlotte at the top of the week, you can check out Double Door Inn’s variety night, The Monday Night Allstars, Monday night, Snug Harbor‘s resident hip hop night, Knocturnal, or The Evening Muse’s open mic night, Find Your Muse, featuring this week Irish/Americana folk artist Jim Sharkey. On Tuesday the 15, check out Evanescence at The Fillmore, indulge in some jazz with Double Door Inn‘s Bill Hanna Jazz Jam, or check out three-piece metal band NIHIL along with local metal groups Violent Gods and Kairos over at The Milestone.
Continuing through the week, you can find Snug Harbor’s November residency, El Malpais, on Wednesday night accompanied this week by Hectagons!, Blossoms, and Family Friend, as well as the Kat Country Jam at The Fillmore to benefit St. Jude, indie pop duo MYZICA at The Evening Muse, and Helmet along with Local H over at Visulite Theatre. On Thursday the 17, you can check out Yellowcard on their The Final World Tour at The Fillmore, Snug Harbor‘s SHIPROCKED!, and Sloan at Visulite Theatre. Also, you can stop by Double Door Inn for some rock ‘n’ roll courtesy of Driftwood, as well as Neighborhood Theatre for a lineup featuring Our Last Night, Hands Like Houses, The Color Morale, and Out Came Wolves, and a lineup at The Milestone including Drones for Queens, Earworms, Green Fiend, Black Fleet, and Greevance.
Wrapping up the week elsewhere will be Elle King’s The Ministry Tour up at Raleigh’s The Ritz on Monday night, as well as Bob Mould Band with Birds of Avalon over at Carrboro County’s Cat’s Cradle, followed by some emo-pop courtesy of Wet and Demo Taped on Wednesday night and some contemporary style on Thursday with The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, Supersuckers, and Jesse Dayton. Also, you can check out Marc Maron at Carolina Theatre in Durham Thursday night, and further south, Badazz and BowlLane’s College Tour at Columbia’s The Music Farm.
