What’s New This Week
For the week of October 28, 2016
Halloween weekend is upon us and I’m not sure which I’m more afraid of: the overkill of slutty costumes that’s about to overtake the streets or all these mischievous clowns. It’s really a toss up. Regardless, come as you are– just maybe not as a clown?– and enjoy some frightful yet fun things going down in Charlotte and nearby this week.
I’m starting with my hometown this week, Raleigh/Durham, since one of my favorites will be stopping by up there this weekend. The electronic duo, Phantogram, was at The Ritz Raleigh Friday night, October 28, and you bet we were there. Keep an eye out for a review and photo gallery of the fantastical night! That same night, Durham’s Carolina Theatre and their Retro Classics edition of Carolina Theatre Films and Ian Hunter and The Rant Band with Jeffrey Dean Foster at Carrboro County’s Cat’s Cradle both put smiles on the faces of many. Saturday the 29th brought a nice ’90s throwback at The Ritz with Switchfoot and Relient K, Tower of Power at Carolina Theatre, and a lineup of MCs at Cat’s Cradle including Danny Brown, Zelooperz, and Professor Toon. Cat’s Cradle will also host some alternative rap on Sunday the 30th with NF and Fleurie, while The Ritz kicks off the mid-week Monday the 31st with Machine Gun Kelly.
Alternatively, you could have checked out a couple of dual-night seasonal festivities, including Snug Harbor’s Haunted Harbor featuring Sarah Shook & The Disarmers, El Malpais, Dan Melchior, and The Brokeoffs for Night 1 on Friday, followed by Night 2 with Andy the Doorbum, Ahleuchatistas, PataBamba, Poontanglers, Spirit System, and Must Be the Holy Ghost Saturday night. The Milestone also had a weekend-long celebration featuring some classic coverage with The Annual Milestone Halloween Fiasco starring The Bleeps as Madonna, Minimums as Green Day, Automatic Fantastic as ZZ Top, Van Huskins as Superchun, Glimpses as Oasis, October as Celtic Frost, and Gore Gore Luchadores as your favorite wrestling icons. Saturday night held round 2 featuring The Dead Men as Eminem, Knowne Ghost as Death Cab for Cutie, Suit City as At the Drive In, Porch Mob as Die Antwoord, Fat Geoff as R. Kelly, Tiny City as Miley Cyrus, Rothschild as Brand New, Tom,Hanks as The Clash, Take the Fall as Sum 41, and Dock Ellis.
Elsewhere Saturday evening included The New Artist Showcase at Amos’ featuring Problem Child, Woo Nice, Raphel Ratliff, 646 Ent Artist Anna Mae, Yung Optu, and Tiffany Taylor. Phantogram visited The Fillmore again, QC native Randy Franklin & The Sardines were at Double Door Inn for a Halloween-themed party, and some country-rooted alt-rock is at The Evening Muse with Jess Klein, Gaelynn Lea and Walker Lukens. Don’t forget about two nights of BASSH at Visulite Theatre Saturday and Sunday night, and Neighborhood Theatre’s nod to All Hallow’s Eve, Fear & Loathing in NoDa, with Evergone, Radio Lola, The MollyWops, Aarodynamics, live music, skits, costumes and more.
Rounding out the weekend Sunday the 30th will be Machine Gun Kelly at The Fillmore and Snug Harbor’s karaoke night, Bone Snugs-N-Harmony, while Monday the 31st closes out October with familiar faces and fresh new styles. Check out some avant-rock at The Milestone Monday night with Kayo Dot and Antares, The Record Company at Visulite Theatre, or Touche Amore with Tiny Moving Parts and Culture Abuse at Neighborhood Theatre. There are also some local fixtures such as Snug Harbor’s Knocturnal, The Evening Muse’s open mic night Find Your Muse, and Double Door Inn’s The Monday Night Allstars.
The week continues in Charlotte with a progressive metal and rock lineup at The Milestone Tuesday, November 1, featuring Umbra, Surgeon, Lord Almighty, and Moynoq; Double Door Inn’s weekly jazz session, Bill Hanna Jazz Jam; and OSO OSO with Big Eyes, Dead Bars, and Dollhands at Snug Harbor. You get another shot at checking out Switchfoot and Relient K Wednesday night, the 2nd, over at The Fillmore, while Snug Harbor debuts its November residency for Wednesday nights, El Malpais, and BASSH pays another visit to Visulite Theatre.
Your alternatives Wednesday night include The Evening Muse’s local artist spotlight, The Tosco Music Open Mic night, and some collaborative indie rock at The Milestone by Charming Disaster, The Lady Comes First, and Em Young. On Thursday the 3rd, you can stop by Snug Harbor for SHIPROCKED!, Rainbow Kitten Surprise at Visulite Theatre, the comedy- and crowd-friendly social media star collaboration, Team Rowland Tour, at Neighborhood Theatre, or some roots and alt-country at The Evening Muse with Don DiLego, Cashavelly Morrison, and Tyler Nail. Igor & Red Elvises will also be in town Thursday night at Double Door with a plethora of backgrounds and style, as well as a punk/metal lineup at The Milestone featuring Such Gold, Pkew Pkew Pkew, Minimums, and Rothschild.
To bookend this week’s itinerary, our friends in Raleigh and Durham wrap up the week with some funk rock at Cat’s Cradle Tuesday night with The Motet and The Congress, as well as Brian Culbertson over at Carolina Theatre, and Snakeships and Lakim at Cat’s Cradle on Wednesday night. On Thursday night, Carolina Theatre in Durham hosts another Carolina Theatre Films edition featuring MOSAIC, while Cat’s Cradle hosts the comedy project from comedian and The Daily Show co-creator, Lizz Windstead, You Should Smile More and Other Manspirational Observations featuring Winstead along with Helen Hong, Joyelle Johnson, Buzz Off, and Lucille.
