One thing I have always loved about our music scene, and something that never seems to fail or disappoint, is the amount of versatility there is when it comes to the style spectrum. You can literally start on one side of town and find yourself visiting the nostalgic ruins of classic genres past, and then cross town and find yourself delightfully surprised by unique and untapped talent unheard of until recently.
Speaking of classics, Amos’ Southend is part of our Friday night kickoff April 8 with the high-energy ’80s rock band, Bad Romeo, and Cosmic Charlie chips in at Visulite Theatre with the Dark Side of the Dead set. You can also check out some singer/songwriter and multi-instrumental talent at The Evening Muse featuring Mary Fahl and Rachael Sage followed by Jonathan Richman and Tommy Larkins; progressive funk quintet Earpunk with Nashville rock band Maradeen at Neighborhood Theatre; or Mo’ Mojo at Double Door Inn. Also around town Friday night are SOJA at The Fillmore and rock ‘n’ roll lineup Tiny City, Minnesota License Plate, Jon Dwyer and The Stress Exchange at The Milestone.
Some of our neighbors start off the weekend with a range of alternative and rock, including two nights of Umphrey’s McGee at The Ritz Raleigh both Friday night and Saturday, April 9, and some electronic rock at Carrboro County’s Cat’s Cradle with Magic Man, The Griswolds and Panama Wedding Friday night. Continuing the weekend at Cat’s Cradle are high-energy pop group They Might Be Giants Saturday night and high-spirited seven-piece The Mowgli’s with singer/songwriter Julia Nunes and ’60s California pop-inspired The Rebel Light on Sunday, April 10. Down below in Columbia this weekend, you can check out Andy Mineo Friday night at The Music Farm and Riff Raff on Saturday evening.
Back around Charlotte this weekend, we’re treated to some more rock ‘n’ roll including The Milestone’s Saturday night lineup featuring GOAT AND YOUR MOM, Dirty South Revolutionaries, The Body Bags and Queen City Rejects. Catch folk rock artist Jennifer Knapp followed up by Nashville rock band Future Thieves and The Wealthy West at The Evening Muse, and singer/songwriter pairing Dave Barnes and Lucie Silvas at Neighborhood Theatre. Also on Saturday night, you have your choice of Old 97s with Western Star at Visulite Theatre, multi-instrumental singer/songwriter Eleanor Tallie with blues and Southern soul duo Stolen Hearts at Double Door Inn, and Purgatory 69‘s Perverted Pixels 14th Anniversary Party at Amos’ featuring DJ Triskyl and Chris Numbertwo.
On Sunday, April 10, check out an array of rappers and MCs at Amos’ including Tech N9ne, Ritz, May Day, Steve Stone, Ces Cru and F Dux; Snug Harbor’s karaoke night, Bone Snugs-N-Harmony; or African-infused salsa crew Plena Libre at Neighborhood Theatre. Mondays are the heart of our local residencies, and this Monday, April 11, is no different bringing us another week of Snug Harbor’s Knocturnal, Double Door Inn‘s The Monday Night Allstars, and The Evening Muse’s open mic night featuring singer/songwriter Luke Mitchem. If you’re looking for something new or different this Monday, swing by Amos’ for pop singer/songwriter Elle King or The Milestone for some punk rock courtesy of Pears, Such Gold, HU/LK, Almost People and The Not Likelys.
Carrying us into the midweek Tuesday, April 12, is a little bit of metal, jazz, and indie rock. Quite the musical buffet. For those with a taste for something louder and rougher around the edges, check out Die Young, Funeral Chic, Fractured and Self Destruct at The Milestone. If you’re looking for something more traditionally executed, check out Patrick O’Boyle with 100 Watt Horse and Oh, Rose at Snug Harbor. Something more easy going like a fine glass of wine can be enjoyed at Double Door Inn with Bill Hanna Jazz Jam. On Wednesday, April 13, The Fillmore will host the Kat Country Jam benefiting St. Jude’s Hospital featuring country music favorites such as Kip Moore, Dan + Shay, Brandy Clark, Canaan Smith and High Valley. Snug Harbor’s April residency, Triptych Collective, returns for another week, The Evening Muse gets a dose of acoustic music with Matt Flinner Trio and Bob Carlin, and longtime artist Wreckless Eric teams up with Charlotte artist Bruce Hazel at Double Door Inn.
Wrapping up the week around Raleigh and Durham includes a reggae lineup at Cat’s Cradle Wednesday with alternative reggae, roots reggae and traditional featuring Iration, Hirie and The Expanders, as well as Durham Savoyards’ H.M.S. Pinafore at Carolina Theatre Thursday night, April 14. Bringing the week to a close in Charlotte on Thursday will be Snug Harbor’s SHIPROCKED! featuring a tribute to CBGB’s; folk music artist Eliza Gilkyson at The Evening Muse; jazz-infused rock show Universal Sigh with Charlotte jazz band Groove 8 at Double Door Inn; and the uplifting and empowering musicality of Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars at Neighborhood Theatre. Elsewhere Thursday evening are hardcore/metal trio Clover along with Black Feet, Earworms and Old Scratch at The Milestone, and local rock ‘n’ roll lineup The MollyWops, ELIAH, Mare’s Leg, Molding Willard, Comfortably Nuts, ForgiveMeNot and Q Baby with Den of Wolves at Amos’.
